The correct answer is ecological systems theory, which focuses on the complex interplay between an individual and the various environments they interact with throughout their life. This framework, initially developed by Urie Bronfenbrenner, posits that a person's development is influenced by multiple levels of environmental systems, ranging from immediate contexts like family and school to broader societal influences such as cultural and economic factors.

Ecological systems theory is particularly valuable because it acknowledges that development does not occur in isolation. Instead, it emphasizes how different systems—microsystems (such as family and peers), mesosystems (interactions between different microsystems), exosystems (external environments that indirectly influence development), and macrosystems (cultural and societal norms)—interconnect and impact an individual’s growth and behavior over time.

This understanding is crucial for counselors and mental health professionals, as it encourages a holistic approach to client care that considers the broader social context of an individual’s life. The recognition that individuals are part of many overlapping systems allows for more effective intervention strategies by addressing not just the individual but also the external factors affecting their well-being.
